Our farm is located in Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province. Huong Phung is considered the coffee capital of Khe Sanh, with a total coffee area of 1,896 hectares, accounting for 42% of the district’s coffee output. The main coffee varieties grown here are Arabica catimor, along with Liberica, and a small amount of newly planted Robusta.

Huong Phung is situated in a transitional climate zone influenced by the unique climate system of the Truong Son mountain range. The average annual temperature is relatively moderate, with a subtropical climate (22°C), and the temperature difference between day and night ranges from 10 to 12°C, making it ideal for the growth and development of Arabica coffee.

Khe Sanh Coffee- Arabica catimor

The arabica coffee variety grown in the Huong Phung area comes from the Brazilian coffee arabica Var catimor variety, which was crossed between the Caturra variety and the Hybrido de timor hybrid. This is the F6 generation coffee variety selected from the generations F4 & F5 by the Eakmat Coffee Research Institute. The characteristics of this variety are short trunks, compact canopy, and short internodes, there is no difference in appearance compared to the Caturra varieties, young leaves are thick and in light bronze and dark green color. The leaves’ edges are wavy and the tree trunks are about 2-3m high, branches are 0.8-1.2m long, the canopy diameter ranges from 1.2-1.5m, and the internode length from 3-4cm. The branch is straight, making an angle of <80 degrees with the tree trunk. The ripe coffee berries are red, and the approximate weight of 100 seeds is 12-16 grams. This variety is capable of high yield, suitable for thick planting density, has good drought tolerance and is suitable for areas at low altitudes above seawater.

 

🌱 The associated area of ​​Pun Coffee by the end of 2021 is 135 ha in villages: Xa Ry, Co Nhui, Old Doa, But Viet, Huong Phu, Phung Lam, Cheng… With a purchased production of 150,000kg of fresh berries at a price that is 2 times higher than the market price (output tends to increase again when the world economy stabilizes after the Covid-19 epidemic)

🌱 The cultivation of arabica coffee in Huong Phung accounts for more than 90% of the monoculture farming method, which can significantly affect the quality of coffee trees. Recently, to plan a coffee area to meet EU standards, Pun Coffee has implemented an agroforestry model to create a biodiversity coffee garden and generate an active source of income from the coffee garden.

✔️Currently, the raw material area of ​​Pun Coffee has a lifespan of about 15-20 years, some coffee trees have become old, along with the price of coffee has been falling for many years, has caused many people to neglect taking care of the trees, created a decrease in crop quality which directly affects the quality of fresh berries.

✔️ The habit of using too many chemicals for a long time has made thecoffee farming land become degraded, callused, … coffee is not grown under shade trees, and is cultivated according to the trend of monoculture.

Pun Coffee cooperates with experts from the Global Coffee Organization (GCP) to start a journey of training in replanting, regenerating, taking care of coffee trees and strengthening the trees that give shade and help block the wind, ensure occupational safety and health in the production chain directly from the coffee garden, in order to re-plan the areas of high-quality standard coffee.

Coffee is an industrial crop that brings high economic value. However, over the past 10 years, the area of ​​coffee trees in Huong Phung has been shrinking, with low output and poor quality. The geographical and soil conditions of the land of Huong Phung (the coffee capital of Khe Sanh) are suitable for the development of Arabica coffee. When farmers have the right care and harvesting process, the right technique will determine more than 30% of the quality of a cup of coffee.
